Made a tool that can scatter instanced meshes on a mesh based on a mask texture inside Unreal. As a next step, this should be fed into a procedural mesh component, to be able to bake a unified static mesh from them.

Unfortunately it looks like I'll still need to run them through a proc mesh because otherwise the scatter of the combined mesh can't inherit the normals of the underlaying mesh which is needed for smooth shading in case of foliage.

For instances could you not pack the surface normals as a float and pass them through custom instance data, or even in the instance transform?

At the end I want to merge them into a single static mesh in which case I'd loose the per instance data.

The goal of this is to bring in the rock and the moss meshes into unreal, run them through this tool, and output a merged static mesh with 2 materials. One for the rock , and one for the moss. The moss also needs to inherit and keep the rock normals even after merging.

maybe you could also add a fins option so you're only paying the pixel cost for the silhouette of the rock, depending on how reliant on the cards are to get the shading you want

Could you elaborate on this please? I'm not sure what you mean by fins.
