Definitely a weird time realising you have a major interest in a different specialisation than what you're already in. That being said, if anyone has any advice for a just-starting #gamesvfx artist - I'd be forever grateful. Hopefully I'll be able to still dive into 3D and VFX!
When I'm working on vfx I usually go for a shader solution first, then I beef it up with particle emitters if its a localised effect. Hardest part is making something cool but optimal, but I'd recommend focusing on making stuff look good first so you know what can be done :)

I learnt through experimentation and sometimes picking apart other people's work, and applying prior knowledge (animation principles still apply). Unfortunately I don't think the learning process is as clear cut as say env/character art though, just gotta try stuff out

Yeah! I've just been playing around with cascade and some basic shaders or UVing meshes to make some stuff work. But definitely doesnt feel as clear cut as environment art. Just been collecting all the marketplace effects to rip apart xD
