This week I've seen several people twoot about not liking visual/node based programming, so I will now balance that out by talking about how awesome it is.https://twitter.com/joewintergreen/status/789779700197404672 …

This is all about Blueprint, but an even huger example is node-based materials/shaders. How great is that? Shaders are art, and this just lets the artists do the art. We boxed ourselves into shipping programmer art for years!

I think one of the bigger problems too is how shit the tools for quickly organising node graphs are. I use Houdini day in, day out. So when I use any other node based software I see how bad the tools are compared to Houdini where I can work fast

Perhaps its because they mirror concepts I'm familiar with from traditional code, but I've always felt that BP contains plenty of quick and effective organisational tools, often ignored by people, hence BPs from hell, etc.

I find that all the BPs from hell are just because the people making them are unaware of programming concepts like functions, macros, loops, object inheritance etc. I've seen what you'd class as clean blueprints still cause a nightmare debugging.
