“The U.K. Deed Poll Service”. Sounds important, eh? Sounds like part of government. Well, it’s not. It’s a private company with an office in somewhere called Tolleshunt Major in Essex. It’s basically a law firm, and it’ll charge you to help you change your name by deed poll.
The article says they charge £35 to change a child’s “title” from Master to Miss or vice versa. Well. Here is an official form published by the court system in England and Wales for changing your child’s name. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/695734/loc019-minor-eng.pdf …
Guess what? You can’t change your child’s, or your own, “title”. Because it’s not something that appears on the form.
So heaven knows what the UK Deed Poll Service and its “senior deed poll officer” Louise Bowers (I’m guessing she’s an employee at its office in Tolleshunt Major) are charging people for. But they’ve somehow got themselves on the front page of a national newspaper, so hats off.
PS: any sort of official “UK Deed Poll Service” would be a strange idea, because the registration of births and names is a devolved power in Scotland and Northern Ireland. So.
PPS: Louise Bowers told the Guardian in 2013: “A deed poll from us looks more official, but it isn't.” https://amp.theguardian.com/money/2013/jun/29/deed-poll-websites-avoid?__twitter_impression=true …
Funnily enough @chrismullinexmp recently said he had a sequel out.
Good stuff, Sir. Thankfully, it's safely tucked behind a paywall, so hardly anyone will read it, let alone believe it.
Apart from the 750 000 who buy it.
