Context: I'm Kiwi. Now, i've tried: - good sleep hygiene (screens, downtime, apps, sleep meditations etc) - non-drug aids (melatonin, any over-the-counter sleep aids, and jetlag treatments) - just straight up fuckin sleeping pills (awful taste, feel shit the next day). 2/9

my mate, whose higher education is in neuroscience (specialising in drugs) sent me a link to a doc in NZ who is able to prescribe medicinal cannabis. There aren't many. I sent a hopeful email (we have decent healthcare!) explaining my symptoms and other issues, like PCOS. 3/9

The response: $360 for the initial Zoom consult $180 for the follow up to receive a prescription and the kicker? $900 for what I'd need to help me sleep. And that shit isn't exactly going to last if you're using it every night. That's an ongoing cost every couple of months. 4/9pic.twitter.com/uLLAHGHxSq

Buying CBD oil (no THC) in NZ in the 'black market' ends up being around $100 for enough to last 4 months of sleep aid. I know this from Sources. Not me ofc, but Sources.
It is much, much cheaper to access this shit illegally than it is to do it the legal route 5/9Show this thread -
for something that is proven to do much less damage than the alcohol that most of us drink. which we get over the counter. in as large a quantity as we like. without a prescription. Obviously, i'm fucking upset and this is bullshit and it sucks. 6/9

I sent a response back saying "sorry, this is prohibitively expensive" and they were very understanding and apologetic. I'm not blaming the doc -- the initial consult can be a bit expensive. That's understandable. But not having it subsidised like most other prescriptions 7/9

means NZ is directly telling people "nah, go find it on the street". That can put people in situations where they are a) anxious, b) potentially unsafe if they're meeting strangers and c) doing something illegal in order to obtain pain relief, anxiety relief, or sleep aid. 8/9

Do you have experience with this actually having the desired effect? It doesn't work the same way on everyone. For me (with attention deficit disorder and autism) it does the opposite of making me able to sleep. So before you invest in something expensive in NZ make sure it works

Same effect on me. It makes me jittery and anxious.
