      In 2015 #Africa earned about $2.5bn for #coffee export. #Germany’s re-export was about $3.9bn http://theconversation.com/time-for-africa-to-transition-from-extractive-to-learning-economies-59089?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=twitterbutton … via @TC_Africa

Excellent! Based on our experiences working in African Govts, we think 1st step should be this. Thoughts welcome. http://institute.global/sites/default/files/field_article_attached_file/The_Jobs_Gap.pdf …

African Govts need good governance and not free market capitalism/neo-liberalism.

I prefer 'good governing' as it's about how you actually make your economic development vision a reality. Market focus is important though.

Transferring total control of our economic factors to private sector is not the right policy prescription. Africa needs a mix

Agreed & it depends which private sector too. Some align to developmental objectives, some don't. Hence we need modern industrial policy.

Focussing on leaders implies citizens are intellectually bankrupt. The focus is a remnant of the old rule of chiefs. Try #democracy

Leaders emerge from the citizens. If we want economic development what matters is empowering citizens who want to make a difference to lead

Hard to empower citizens who believe in chiefs or where every citizen wants to a chief of the old order rather than lead change

Yes it is, but I don't think it's fair to say 'every citizen wants to be a chief of old'. Many (a lot) want to lead change.

Not necessarily. The power asymmetry in d political structure presents a network of unequals. Intellectualism is a bystander

Yes, one has to join political elite first & there are barriers. But all progressive Govt leaders I worked with were 'citizens' at one point

Leadership and followership are inextricably linked. It has been described as a spectrum oscillating on a continuum. Citizenship is d answer

Citizenship is important but on the flip side, it can pull Govts apart & make them dysfunctional. Govts' also need focus to build capacity

#Democracy is a construct of very extensive significations. It assumes representation of mutital relations. Not always the case.

Sometimes insufficient time for key reforms prevents progressives from helping sectors export value added products, not lack of followers.

It's more governing than governance: it's not accountability that ultimately matters but ability of visionaries to undertake right reforms.

Accountability matters, but not as much as ability to govern. Ethiopia is delivering value added exports & jobs. Others are not.
