@calestous perhaps this explain their lack of appreciation of science and technology...despite the potentials.

@isqilnajim There is certainly more appreciation now that there was a decade ago. But I am not sure of support among followers. -
@calestous the appreciation is not evenly spread across Africa. Some countries are more committed others pay lipservices -
@isqilnajim For decades the number of presidents with such background hovered between two and three. -
@calestous the ex president Obasanjo of Nigeria did a lot in science and tech. Unfortunately, he didnt initiate a national policy on science -
@isqilnajim I do not believe having a sectoral ministry is the best way to promote science for development. -
@calestous unfortunately that is what most of them are doing. NGOs ll have to step up their acts.Africa need more NGOs in science promotion

@Calestous can we see a list of them somewhere online? -
@carlzimmer No--it is not online. I have just gone through their bios that are online. The number may be higher that eight (15)%.

@Calestous The real question is whether those 15% are more or less likely to be murderous, corrupt megalomaniacs than the others. -
@m_wall I was looking at academic training where I have some expertise. How about compiling a list using that expertise of yours :) -
@Calestous Heh... Excellent reply! Not sure many African leaders are neuroscientists though...

@Calestous@carlzimmer Has the US ever had a president trained in engineering or science? -
@pwbrewer@calestous I think Carter, trained in nuclear engineering in the Navy, is the best we've got. http://www.cartercenter.org/news/experts/jimmy_carter.html … -
@carlzimmer@pwbrewer Why Don't Americans Elect Scientists? http://nyti.ms/N0FWth

@Calestous does that make those 7 better than the rest in any way? -
@Iambuthuman You must have an answer to the question since you brought it up. -
@Calestous I wish I did! But my ignorance regarding Africa compels me to respectfully decline to answer your question.
