I guess part of the reason I find the can opener story so egregious is that I myself, despite my total lack of handiness and aversion to the manly practical arts, am old enough that I just always remember knowing how a can opener works and can't imagine having to learn it

It's just weird. Just weird and bizarre and not good parenting. Show her how to use the damn can opener. What are you going to do when it's time to teach her how to drive? Sit her in the car and let her mutilate the gearbox until she gets it?

Opportunities for kids to figure stuff out for themselves ae great. You know what else they are? Plentiful. There will be another one along in a moment where she doesn't have to go hungry for six hours because you're being a weapons grade wanker about it.

Exactly this. You ask her to try to figure the can opener out. But you also give her hints and pointers to lead her to the answer. And if she doesn't get it after a few minutes, you show her. This isn't the sort of thing that she *needs* to figure out on her own.

He's so proud of himself for having seemingly taught her the lesson of perseverance he doesn't realise he's also taught her the lesson of "don't ask dad for help".
