Forgiveness is a key foundational element in most abusive relationships. The abusee is manipulated or bullied into forgiving the abuser again and again, without ever holding a grudge. This is true of a battered spouse, and it is true of an oppressed populace.

Quite. Some don't even need to manipulate or abuse; they simply take advantage of those with a forgiving nature and/or belief system.

Incidentally, there are countless "Christians" over many centuries who have done irreparable harm to countless millions, by willfully misinterpreting their own holy book by failing to teach the plainly stated truth – there is NO forgiveness, without full and sincere repentance.

Real understanding begins with forgiving oneself. This may seem to be illogical or even offensive but it works. Forgive yourself, then the other person. Then the sun shines in perfect round.
