There was a late 17th-century Japanese copy of this Xining Yuanbao seal script coin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagasaki_trade_coins … https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=2726 …) which was made for export and widely distributed across Asia, and later recopied in Vietnam.
I think this coin is much more likely to be a later Japanese or Vietnamese copy than an original Song coin, especially as the modifications to the square hole suggest it was worn as jewellery. Probably need metallurgical analysis to be certain.
Your question about metalurgical anylisis is very interesting. Must be sure where it comes from.
Indeed :) I think the coin can't be relied even if genuine, as the British Museum considered it, but does provide a nice jumping off point for surveying the archaeological & documentary evidence, as I hope I made clear in the post :)
I'd love it to be a genuine medieval import, but there are more probable alternatives. Perhaps @HelenWangLondon can say whether it is an original Song coin or a later Japanese or Vietnamese copy?
Enjoyed your post @caitlinrgreen (thank you!) - but it's more likely a later deposit. From the photos it looks Song dynasty to me. I've posted it on https://www.facebook.com/OrientalNumismaticSociety/ … to field more comments. For more examples of Xining coins with rosette holes see http://primaltrek.com/flowerhole.html
Thanks! And thank you for ID, much appreciated! (Was just wondering about the rosette hole & if meant more probably Song after reading that very article, in fact!) Later deposition def more than credible, but was nice excuse to review the archaeological+documentary evidence! :)
