Interestingly, just did an ngram on the two phrases and there was a brief period in the 1980s when BM overtook BA, before then falling back to rough parity post-1990... Wonder why?
That is strange. I think the main proponents of Barbary "ape" are Gibraltarians and that is where most British media is focused due to both the tourists' and macaques' bad behaviour.
That would make sense. Have to admit, I'm significantly more familiar with the term 'Barbary ape' than Barbary macaque and assumed readers would be too. Will look into changing it, but unfortunately is in url :-/
