Do you think it connected down to a tunnel and a safe way to the shore from the cliff top? Or too simplistic an explanation? Fascinating in any regard!
-
I don't know, but it's fun to speculate! ;)

That’s fascinating, incredible they made that so long ago. I bet that’ll fall into the sea soon, or has it been visible for a while? Dr Green you are a rascal, you keep showing me all these great places & things to see.
-
Alas, already gone :(
-
Oh that’s so sad, I’d like to have seen that my friend. Have a good day.

Yes, but it doesn't say what it was for. Do you know?
-
If I'm reading right, the article suggests a different shaft had been thought to be a chalk shaft (mining???) but later turned out to hold an Iron Age horde. It may be one of those inconclusive or wait-and-see moments. Exciting that they're excavating!
-
yes agreed, but I am confused!
-
Me, too

a mine shaft? Maybe looking for tin?
-
Not tin, not in chalk, possibly flint?
-
of course, flint was valuable even through the Bronze Age.
-
Although, to be fair, I would have expected a flint mine to open out when it reached a good seam (like Grimes Graves), but this just seems to keep on going. Might have been a well?
-
Neolithic mines were more open, later mines were very deep and narrow. The bottom seems filled with rock debris.
