Isadore of Seville Etymologies XII.iii.7 on the hedgehog: 'This animal has a certain cleverness, for when it has plucked a bunch of grapes from the vine, it rolls itself backwards over it and in this way takes it (i.e. stuck to the quills) to its offspring.'
Wonderful image, isn't it! :D
Alas, their necks are too short to eat them off their backs!
Maybe they will shake their spikes so the grapes will fall
Ah yes, this is typical hedgehog behaviour, grape rolling. Perceptive as ever, our medieval ancestors.
Hi Dr Green, was just thinking about you while checking a quotation from St Julian of Norwich - thanks as ever for your brilliant tweets! Have a lovely weekend
I had to share this, a hedgehog has pricked up a human with a basket of fruit.https://twitter.com/LizReal1/status/816321297835839488 …
In Pliny it's apples
That’s adorable!! I had no idea that’s how the gathered fruit for their babies.
Hey wait a minute! Isn't it GROUNDHOG day, not HEDGEHOG day?
