When Lincoln's Upper West Gate was rediscovered under the 11thC Norman castle in 1836, it was practically complete, although the upper chamber subsequently collapsed when more earth was removed (pic=reconstruction by David Vale of how it originally looked).

There's another. I bought this 1836 Day & Haghe lithograph of the Western Entrance into Ancient Lindum inscribed to John, Earl Brownlow by Samuel Tuke in a Lincoln auction last night. I cannot find any other copy of it, which is intriguing ...
