Thanks! I find it fascinating how much survived into the early modern era! :)

Is there a massive Roman Temple underneath the Cathedral? That’s what I’ve always been told🤔

No- 2/3 of the cathedral is inside the SE corner of the first Roman city, away from the forum and principal buildings. The baths were to the N. Much yet to be learned though.

I just try and imagine a similar skyline to Dougga in Tunisia(minus the baking weather). But didn’t early Christian’s build churches over pagan temples?

The early church of St Paul in the Bail is the focus for that at Lincoln. The late translation from Dorchester to Lincoln in 1072 came only after the Norman castle was begun which recast the city- the cathedral with its own fortified west front still faces its gate.

But the church on the Bail can’t be seen from the bottom of steep hill? Surely big Roman Temples were overlooking the top of steep hill. Just like many other Roman towns that are built of high ground or ridges!

Precisely what lay beneath it is within the 'much to be learned' arena. What's for certain is that the basilica and forum (and St Paul) were set at the highest ground at the centre. Here's a reconstruction, and York for comparison.pic.twitter.com/IHV0i9wbnr

I guess we’ll never know what lays beneath the Cathedral or much else at the top of the hill. I do know the Roman gate near the county offices. Could do with a better conservation program. Because it’s slowly falling to pieces

It’s an awful shame. Youths just sit under the offices and drink/smoke whilst kicking bits of the structure off. I know we haven’t exactly got a Dougga or Ephesus. But let’s preserve what we’ve got!
