Dr Jonathan Foyle added,
Thanks! I find it fascinating how much survived into the early modern era! :)
Is there a massive Roman Temple underneath the Cathedral? That’s what I’ve always been told
No- 2/3 of the cathedral is inside the SE corner of the first Roman city, away from the forum and principal buildings. The baths were to the N. Much yet to be learned though.
I just try and imagine a similar skyline to Dougga in Tunisia(minus the baking weather). But didn’t early Christian’s build churches over pagan temples?
The early church of St Paul in the Bail is the focus for that at Lincoln. The late translation from Dorchester to Lincoln in 1072 came only after the Norman castle was begun which recast the city- the cathedral with its own fortified west front still faces its gate.

Indeed :) Initial ?L4th–L6thC church focus was in centre of forum & not convinced that it relates to any pagan structures; then focus poss moved into basilica to north in E7thC–8thC, with Middle Saxon cathedral now often thought in Lower City :) See e.g.https://twitter.com/caitlinrgreen/status/940317795480416256 …
Dr Caitlin Green added,
So where were the massive pagan structures in your opinion?
