Is Thorfast advertising his comb-making skills, or is the owner reminding themselves where they got the comb so they can go back when they need another?

I like to think of it like those plastic combs with cases that museums and other attractions used to sell when I was small with their logo/name emblazoned on the outside ;)

Maybe, one day we shall find more combs with 'Thorfast made a good comb' written on them and the advertising interpretation will be more likely. Or maybe Thorfast was not a professional comb maker and was just pleased with his one effort.

Indeed! Suspect we'll never know! Just fun to speculate :) (Fwiw, site it came from was destroyed in the 19thC to become a railway station)

I agree. The stories we can tell ourselves about these artefacts are the fun part. :)

Indeed, seen it many times, in fact it is the comb I have made the most copies and variants of. It has some interesting features that everyone forgets to mention as they are distracted by the runes!pic.twitter.com/CDEKeDJMfs
