Took a walk around Lincoln Cathedral today & @CatherineEsse pointed out that one gargoyle is mysteriously covered up by the south porch — the one known as the 'Devil looking over Lincoln'…pic.twitter.com/TK3QINihpE

Hi Caitlin, he is covered in safety netting as there was signs of cracking. We want to maintain the whole carving so that we have a good representation to recarve from. I hope that helps! Sam
Thanks Sam! So, no sinister goings on in the Cathedral of the type M. R. James might imagine? I'm both relieved and a little disappointed...! ;)
May I ask if a recarving is imminent, Sam? The netting covering seems to have been in place for ?several years now? which seems sad given the prominence of that particular gargoyle, together with the imp, in the cathedral’s fame
I’m afraid not Catherine. The building dictates the programme of repair and there are a number of areas due for repair before the South side. We are constantly fundraising to support the maintenance of the building and so any ideas you may have are always welcome! Sam
Ah, thanks for the information Sam - it sounds like the once-locally famous Devil on the Witches Back or Devil looking over Lincoln, as my mother told me it was called when I was a child, is destined to remain shrouded in green netting :-/
We will get around to him Catherine, just not in the very short term.
Thank you for all the information, Sam :)
I’ve just found this rather nice illustration of said devil-gargoyle in my copy of the c1923 guide to Lincoln I showed you yesterday, Caitlin @caitlinrgreen
- very much part of the Cathedral story as told at that time - but not, now? Puzzling ..

That's great, and very similar to the figurine! I suspect that the late 19th-century and after popularity of the Lincoln Imp eclipsed it, but the covering-up is most intriguing...!pic.twitter.com/lElWDAeT2G
Equal billing in 1921....
