My mother's family was from Co. Kerry and they always banged on about being Roman via shipwrecked sailors. But then they always banged on about banshees & leprechauns. So.
My mother's family came from West Scotland and were sure their black hair came from shipwrecked Spanish Armada sailors
And maybe it did!
My dad, who most certainly was descended from Vikings (or Norwegians in Cumbria) was convinced he was an Ancient Briton 
I think he meant Celtic or Brittonic - small dark prehistoric inhabitants of Cumbria, romantically lurking in the fells...
