Lincoln is also definitely the best for viewing from a distance... https://twitter.com/CatherineEsse/status/911213182617817089 … :)
Dr Caitlin Green added,
Of course, York may be the older cathedral site, but even King Edwin of Northumbria—who founded York in the 7thC—preferred Lincoln to York... ;)
Edwin oversaw the completion of a stone church in Lincoln in c. 627–8 before even York, and so much preferred Lincoln that he had the consecration of the next Archbishop of Canterbury, Honorius, take place there, rather than his own capital... ;)
Didn't know any of that. Interesting. Presume Northumbrian (or Deiran) influence in Lindsey was quite recent at the time
It swapped back and forth between the Mercians and the Northumbrians repeatedly thorough the 7thC.... Everyone wanted to control Lincoln for some reason!
So prior to that it had some independence or is it impossible to know?
Yes, Anglo-Saxon kingdom with royal dynasty etc, before that a British 5th–6thC kingdom and before that a 4thC Roman provincial capital with a Roman governor and bishop....!
