has anyone worked on the over/under for late antique/early med global trade vs recutting/reuse late Roman gems already in W Europe?
(I mean, I know there's good work on the one and on the other, but if there's work attempting to distinguish between the 2)
Noël Adams' PhD on garnet cloisonné worth a look, mainly Late Antique style iirc & generally assumed new imports; good evidence for Red >
> Sea trade in Late Antiquity incl Indo-Pacific beads in 5th–6thC West European graves+at Byzantine port of Berenike on Red Sea, so fits? :)
oh yeah I know there's plenty of ev, just wondering! thanks!
Fwiw, quick flick though Adams suggests does think primarily new imports of Late Antiquity & notes relative rarity of Roman garnet etc :)
