My granny had a black dog at the bottom of her well. Meant to stop us bouncing on the sheet of corrugated iron which covered the 4m hole
Ah! The old "folklore as a tool to stop kids injuring themselves" trick.

Have we got more in the UK because wolves have been extinct here so long?
We’ve got more here because I think we record them. However I have new news in from the Netherlands...
I just wondered if people on the continent have scary stories about wolves rather than dogs. When I was an au pair the kids used to try to scare me with wolf stories (and succeeded only in scaring themselves, natch).
Within folklore it’s all related. Wolves/dogs, wild/domesticated, funerary practice, dogs as protectors of living and dead, carrion eaters, funerary practises, ritual behaviours etc.
