Hello Doc -- I am stunned. I am a gardener - I watch fauna deteriorate ( very quickly ) - I am gobsmacked at this preservation.
It's fabulous, and all along the coastline both in Lincolnshire and beyond. Just out there below the beach and/or low tide mark.....!
I must swot up on my chemistry
It's the waterlogging that is responsible, prevents decay, I believe :)
Check this out: last year a storm on the Baltic coast has uncovered a large chunk of ancient forest, a bit younger though, c. 3000 years oldpic.twitter.com/6tdpA1XSw0
It's in Słowiński Park Narodowy; afaik it got taken by the sea again; they were either burned or chopped deliberately, also interesting
That's stunning...! Thank you :)
Always a pleasure!
I love it, but how can you tell the difference between a Mesolithic tree and one that has been rattling around the ocean for 20 or 30 years?
Various examples from the area have been radiocarbon dated; plus the stumps lodged in the clay below low water :)
I do love ancient things, but half the fun is wandering around not knowing what's what.
All those myths and tales about sunken cathedrals, cities and dreams.

These are awesome! I used to holiday at Anderby Creek and didn't know this lay just off-shore!
There’s a petrified forest off my hometown at Whitburn but tide rarely low enough to see it. Guess it was on the road to the Dogger Hills.
Can the wood be used at all? Or are they considered artifacts?
