Another 7thC Anglo-Saxon gold+garnet pendant, from Southampton Football Club; rest of the cemetery lies unexcavated under the pitch! https://www.flickr.com/photos/wessexarchaeology/51572937/in/gallery-49590941@N04-72157624032036566/ …pic.twitter.com/zg7kerKIZR
That’s insane, now don’t want to sound geeky, but was that The Dell or St Mary’s ground? Such a beautiful item, thanks Dr Green.
St Mary's :)
Thank you, how fascinating. Thanks my friend.
Dr Green, would the scallop shape have any religious significance?
Symbol popular w/ both pagans+Christians in Late Antiquity; could be chance, but def poss, esp as now have 2 examples from 7thC England >
> (n.b. however, not yet used as pilgrim symbol, worth pointing out: scallop shell becomes badge of St James at Compostela in perhaps 9thC)
Thank you. I never knew that the scallop was a pilgrimage symbol that early!
Looks very similar to pieces from the Staffordshire hoard, that has some beautiful workings on it. Am I right thinking this is the same era
Around the same time, yes :)
Interesting, was this found as a separate piece ? Thankyou for your prompt response
Yes, metal-detector find from Hargrave, Northamptonshire :)
Brilliant, I detect myself. Very pleased for the detectorist & for reporting it. You never know he may find more, never say never. Gr8 find
Absolutely! :) And fingers crossed!
@SprocketTrials Lovely, sharing with a friend.
Is it shaped like a scallop as it's a pilgrim token?
A-S garnet jewelry is absolutely stunning.
How beautiful!
