The top third of the cup appears to be hinged. If it is, why would the maker do that?
I believe the ivory bit can be removed from the silver lip and foot, so presumably to do with that? :)
That does make sense. The lip seems to be holding the ivory in place, so folding it up would enable it to be removed from the inside.
