This looks fascinating—a recently-excavated medieval cemetery at Lichfield that contains 'at least two black people of African descent'… :)https://twitter.com/DoctorK_S/status/880105108343750656 …

Also interesting—a L11th–E12thC pilgrim at Winchester who poss travelled considerable distances (N. Africa, Asia?):http://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0005186 …

Recent Winchester Conf paper discussed the leprosarium's evident deep respect for lepers; may have attracted them from afar
-
Isn't it fascinating! Yet, of course, people in the medieval period never moved etc etc ;-)

It was too Dark to see where you were going! ;p

For interest, a 1259 writ of Henry III concerning 'an Ethiopian of the name of Bartholomew' in England.pic.twitter.com/RoFlhrinTI

I hope Bartholomew found a safe haven and lived a good life. Unlikely, I know. I've read so many of these from antebellum US ...
-
Impossible to say :( Perhaps he was able to disappear and enjoy life in somewhere like Ipswich or London?https://twitter.com/caitlinrgreen/status/759461922324488193 …

Uh oh, waiting for the alt-right crazies to lose their heads over this. Shhh.

Hah! ;)

Will watch this! Btw the Africans in the Lichfield cemetery have been examined for nasal guttering etc. I think further tests will be done.
-
I was wondering how it went! :) Don't suppose they've done any isotope work which might shed light on childhood home etc?!
-
I asked, not yet, but I think that's the next step. It was very interesting, possibly 5 Africans, some high status burials. Possible child?
-
How fascinating on both counts!
-
Yes, can't wait for it to be pub'd! When Ethiopians were mentioned as a possibility I said I'd cry if they were. Think I looked a bit odd

-
Hah! :) :) Yes, going to be a must-read, hopefully will get full write-up unlike Ipswich (have bone report but not a proper analysis etc)!
-
I forget that not everyone knows I research portrayals of Africans, esp Ethiopians! I really hope so, it's looking that way, so exciting!
