I think part of the idea was it'd help protect the coast from coastal surges etc...!

So much of the Fens merely seems borrowed.

Indeed! And looking at projected sea-level rises beyond 2100, not on a very long lease, I fear...!

I'm amazed. The memories of 53 were very much alive in my grandparents' minds, and my dad's too. I can see why it didn't get funded :)

Biggest issue was shortage of drinking water. In 1976 I was part of a team bldg a trial embankmt to test feasibility of reservoir in Wash.

Yes, with the donut. If you stepped off the low ground pressure bulldozer, you sank into the mud up to ones middle. Scary.

Holy Mother of Bad Ideas! But I guess that in 1966 the environmental movement had yet to gain much ground (no pun intended!).

That sounds like a bad joke. But my experience with developers has taught me that they'll generally do anything they can get funding for.

True...! This one managed to get Sir Malcolm Campbell on board.... A 15 mile speedway across the coastal marshes with a 4 mile grandstand!

Yikes. At least Campbell chose the Bonneville Salt Flats for his last record run - 301 mph in 1935. Couldn't do much damage there!
