My understanding is that great pieces of smithing, whether swords or gold, were considered to have individual characters & voices. 1/2
Smiths were kin to fey folk & great powers. Their swords could sing. Their jewels spoke of weddings, powers, liminalities.
In that context it makes sense. A lot of food for thought there, and, another route into understanding pre and early medieval mind. Cheers
