Didn't conjecture derive from DH Wright? And even if British, is provincial rendition of late antique mediterranean style?
8f I recall correctly, Henig originated the idea, late 1970s and after? Suggests Durotrigan origin; Dark also assigns to SW.
But very popular in medieval and Roman eras!
