Image, btw, is by @carolemadge (also #FF!) via https://www.flickr.com/photos/carolemage/18643674732/ … & is a Roman mosaic from Veii (Isola Farnese, Italy), 3rd-4thC AD :)
I would think it would be difficult to put those noble hulking beings on a boat of the time, even an onerarius.
Difficult but not impossible, perhaps ;)https://www.flickr.com/photos/carolemage/18643674732/ …
puts the whole "were there African humans in Roman Britain" debate into perspective.
that's your Elephant and Castle, right there....
There were indeed elephants in Britain. A flint handaxe in the Brit Mus, found Grays Inn Rd had elephant’s tooth underneath. Axe dated to 400,000bc- homo Heidelbergensis. Climate then rendered Europe savannah.
prbly Africans involved too.Anglo-Saxon historians omit African presence in key wars. Brad Pitt's Achilles left out Ethiopia
did they have boats big enough? Imagine loading an elephant, and worse getting it out on a beach :/
if that is an elephant, he is having an identity crisis
Elephant & Castle?
@JLDraycott apparently Claudius had one but unsure if that was just a good story. War elephants weren't very effective.
African or Asiatic?
But elephants have hooves, not paws! At least they do nowadays.
