Hardest part is deciding whether to avoid Dark-Age tropes, or just go full-on Mad Max :)

In this context, also interesting that St Cuthbert poss shown a still-functioning Roman fountain at Carlisle in 685: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=QmDK4O1rB44C&pg=PA57#v=onepage&q&f=false …

Pro: Vindo had literacy still in 5th C. Con: They were lighting fires in the regiment's shrine & using the offices as loos!

Ah, but is this decline or change? Need to check that against empire-wide trends, after all: lots of evidence of similar?

      A fair Q. There is also interesting evidence that Vindo's 5th C stone-builders were more talented/"Roman" than the late 4th C

Old coins still used for trade even. But it all feels hyper-local. No evidence of incoming goods, coins. Just subsistence

Thx much for the great clips! Fascinating to see what we know & what we don't. Hadrian's Wall tho had its own twist... (1/2)

(2/2) It was always reliant on outside for resources, esp food. When that contact died out, survival could look very unRoman.
