Fwiw, decapitated man's isotope results now suggest origin in maybe E. Yorkshire or parts of N Germany, looking at recent O+Sr isotope maps?

@caitlinrgreen N Germany. Schleswig-Holstein perhaps? -
@Tweets2CV A little bit further south than that, looking at the maps? More the 'Saxon' areas, I think :) -

@Tweets2CV Oh, fabulous! I'm there again with Sue at the end of the month :) -

On decapitated burials, interesting to note=largely British rite in 1st-5thC AD (black dots) http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0130616 …pic.twitter.com/GdwWNxTTH3

Note too that the paper says this may be due to more fieldwork in SE Britain than elsewhere - it may be an illusion it seems.
-
Indeed. I read the paper. Nonetheless, quite striking :)

@caitlinrgreen I always thought the hanging was regarding the lintels being suspended or 'hung' rather than gallows hanged -
@ritchgrove Generally seems to be taken as 'gallows' here, as per Richard Coates, plus this AS decapitation burial v suggestive? :)

@caitlinrgreen if so would be a guess by primitives living in the ruins of a greater civilisation -
@mememdo My point was that the name Stonehenge means 'Stone gallows' in Old English or similar & we now have an AS execution burial here :) -
@caitlinrgreen@mememdo From German "Henker" - hangman, executioner?
