Intriguing feature is mysterious region-name Ageland: is on 14-16thC maps+ in one 15thC text, applies to Louth area!pic.twitter.com/53CflCXDWl
Another nice early map of Lincolnshire, E15thC, showing Lincoln, Grantham etc but no Ageland https://www.bl.uk/catalogues/illuminatedmanuscripts/record.asp?MSID=6645&CollID=8&NStart=1808 …pic.twitter.com/Jv8lCOSnXC
@caitlinrgreen Enjoyed your post. Is Ageland perhaps a version of Aveland (Aveland wapentake)?
@HeirOxford Sometimes claimed so, but Aveland < Afi + *never* features -g- looking at forms, plus Ageland consistently placed in Louth area>
@caitlinrgreen Ah. Back to the drawing board...
@HeirOxford Yes! I can etymologise it as a district name eg OE ?ac+land?, but still leaves odd question of why so few non-mapping refs!
@caitlinrgreen Frustrating! Good luck with the sleuthing - we're sure you will get there….
