This one had support of Sir Malcolm Campbell+would have taken over entire Wash shoreline; also had 4 miles of grandstands, aerodrome etc!
@caitlinrgreen I love mid-20th-century utopian futurism. So endearingly bonkers.
@sbrackenborough Absolutely---wonderfully so, though I fear the wildlife of the Wash wouldn't have been impressed!
Another never-built town--Woldsea, meant to be built along 2miles of Lincs coast from Sutton to Anderby Creek! (1908)pic.twitter.com/vle2H2sSw9
Woldsea designed for the "better middle class"+retiring colonials: bungalows £150, villas £2000! (pic=planned hotel)pic.twitter.com/zgpWfbA6Ey
@caitlinrgreen What was the reasoning behind it?
@FlipChartRick partly economic, thought that needed a massive 'Europort'; also flood control, improved navigation, land reclamation etc!
@caitlinrgreen Fascinating. @colinwiles wrote a piece saying we should build on floodplains. Make the flood defences economically viable.
@FlipChartRick @colinwiles Oh, intriguing idea!
@caitlinrgreen Can't find the piece but hoping @colinwiles will. I love counterintuitive stuff.
@caitlinrgreen Don't tell Boris Johnson - he might revive the idea!
@caitlinrgreen The Kraken would've got them.
@thesweetcheat Hah! It's always a worry..! ;)
@caitlinrgreen good grief! Thankfully only WaderBird City, still :)
@CatherineEsse I know! One of many such ideas, though!
@caitlinrgreen @SarahB59 Oh good grief! Thank goodness that never came to pass!
@BirderChris @SarahB59 But one of many ideas to build on the Wash---they actually did a feasibility study on one version in 1972!
@caitlinrgreen @BirderChris really interesting but also relieved it was never undertaken.
