@caitlinrgreen that's the one near The Gatherums we looked at?
@caitlinrgreen ah, silly me! Just noticed the post you linked this to, which answers the q :)
John Jefferies, L18thC water carrier from Louth, who used to sell the water of the Aswell spring from leather bags:pic.twitter.com/f7CIL9vFaO
@caitlinrgreen my head is spinning, was at different times a holy well and a water supply for a brewery, bucket list!
@T3_Stephen lol! Yes, it's had a chequered history! Sadly the last brewery closed in the E20thC, succeeded by print works and swimming pool!
@caitlinrgreen makes me wonder what trad. Lincs ales were like pre consolidation. if nothing else that post got you a sale of Louth A-Z
@T3_Stephen Thanks, hope you enjoy! :) Not sure if like earlier ales, but this independent brewery in town=v good: http://www.fulstowbrewery.com/index.html ;)
@T3_Stephen (brewery is newish and at the other end of town and doesn't use the local spring water, but has an old-fashioned ethos!)
@caitlinrgreen I have a recipe book laying around with old regional ales from GB. I have brewed a few of them, most were Yorks
@T3_Stephen Interesting! Do they work the same? Am sure I heard something on the radio about hops being different nowadays....?
@caitlinrgreen hops and barley like any commercial plant changes over time, since I didn't live then can't answer. tasted fine to me.
When was the picture taken and the spring etc lost to view?
The pic is mine from a few years back—is of the only open section :)
The spring in the Aswell Hole was covered over finally in 1974.
@caitlinrgreen And what about Kit Kat Lane (now Kidgate) south of Aswell Spring?
Was the 1808 mapmaker making a joke?
@GeorgeRick1 mutated form of Kidgate :) boundaries look 18thC or do in date, so prob later eastwards extension of medieval Kidgate?
@caitlinrgreen And I noticed that Fish Shambles was to the north, off East Gate.
Hopefully the wind usually came from the south!
@GeorgeRick1 prevailing wind is from the west, I believe! ;)
@caitlinrgreen Established 1612 they say. Looks authentic but could be a tourist magnet I suppose.
