Fwiw, this is where the arch would be if it were visible on the outside of the church (nb church rebuilt c.1430):pic.twitter.com/vXVpZEFjCl
In terms of site history, current St James's church is a 15thC rebuild of a mid-13thC church, which seems to have replaced a L12thC church >
> which in turn replaced earlier church. No pre-L12thC fabric known, but earliest church was prob Anglo-Saxon Minster church of c.700 AD...
@caitlinrgreen could it be a tomb recess if it was within an earlier thicker wall?
@pete_savin Interesting idea---wall is currently not thick enough for that, I think, but perhaps in the past...?
@caitlinrgreen Is it visible on the exterior of the wall? I can't get a good enough look at the south side on Street View.
@GeorgeRick1 no trace on the outside at all...!
@caitlinrgreen Then I'm guessing it served some structural purpose during construction. But why only one? Pity we can't ask the masons!
@GeorgeRick1 I shall investigate more and report back, lol! :)
@caitlinrgreen I love finding things like that EXCEPT that I then spend too much time pondering over them!
@EvansianI exactly! :)
@caitlinrgreen I wonder if it functions like a Roman supporting arch 2 prevent wall from collapsing while building?pic.twitter.com/1mS7fuHvV7
@Phyllida1234 oh, interesting idea---is only one, however; would we expect more?
@caitlinrgreen True; perhaps an inspired builder? (though I don't think a groined arch would be as effective in building). besides (1/2)
@caitlinrgreen Roman supporting arch was part of 'cement sandwich' (double brick walls); to keep wall from collapsing while inner cement wet
@caitlinrgreen A former Easter Sepulchre perhaps?
