@caitlinrgreen Industrial-scale use of slaves in Europe ceases after the fall of the Roman empire? Evidence of slavery before the Romans?
@JAJafri Yes, v big drop in number of shackles in post-Roman period, picks up again in Carolingian/Viking, when looks to be at ports etc
@JAJafri In terms of shackles etc, def some---more so than in immediate poet-Roman period...
@caitlinrgreen @lidongni Your typed info is very interesting although I find it distressing that people could have been treated like that
@EquineAnn @caitlinrgreen slavery is such a complex issue in the ancient world, and the variety of slave experiences was vast
@EquineAnn @caitlinrgreen take this inscription from the #Lincoln forum - an Imperial freedman restoring a templepic.twitter.com/rvTKYaEETs
@lidongni @EquineAnn Very nice! :) and yes, slaves could have v different experiences: shackles etc evidence of worst aspects >
@lidongni @EquineAnn > but others had better lives and could even own slaves themselves... https://walbrookdiscovery.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/wax-on-wax-off/ …pic.twitter.com/y9DLkf2Tmz
@caitlinrgreen @lidongni @EquineAnn & of course depending on how the master interpreted the peculium %%robert
@chopin_slut @caitlinrgreen @lidongni @EquineAnn >xamples. This gets fascinating; diving into Digest 2morrow! %%robert
@chopin_slut @lidongni @EquineAnn Indeed it does, thank you for looking! :)
@caitlinrgreen I wonder how many white British and Irish people realise that they could be distantly descended from slaves...
@Harry_cartoons Indeed, it's both sad and intriguing
@caitlinrgreen But an integral part of ancient economies it would seem...
@Harry_cartoons Indeed, although shackles clearly much more common in Roman than pre-Roman/post-Roman eras
@caitlinrgreen Perhaps rope or leather sufficed in earlier and later periods. :)
