@caitlinrgreen Oh my! Would the 13th century makers have even known whose portrait this was?
@OptimoPrincipi Unclear! Selby Abbey apparently had one with Honorius which they identified as Christ...!https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=CIASAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA10&lpg=PA10#v=onepage&q&f=false …
@OptimoPrincipi Further to this, a E3rdC intaglio of Caracalla reused as image of St Peter: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Intaglio_Caracalla_Cdm_Paris_Chab2101.jpg …pic.twitter.com/5uiK1Nrh1e
@caitlinrgreen never encountered these before, how lovely and interesting!
@Matt0791 There's some really lovely ones! Although the Antoninus Pius one is just so fine, it's amazing!
it's actually incredible.
Isn't it just! :)
I've seen it suggested some sort of bow-powered drill was used to carve these? but the A.P seems in a league of it's own compared to others.
@caitlinrgreen David Booth of Gold Torc hoard fame up here in Scotland found a silver seal not unlike this example in Stirlingshire.
@CrombieJIM Sounds intriguing! Any pics online?
@caitlinrgreen That is the same man who built what Edward Gibbons referred in his book "Rise & Fall of the Roman Empire" as Antoninus's wall
@EquineAnn That's him :)
@caitlinrgreen I thought it was but I wasn't very confident so I thought I'd ask to make sure. Thank you very much for your confirmation.
