@MZiegler3 They discovered a vast hoard of Anglo-Saxon pennies, E11thC, been on news today, but some criticism from archaeologist side. -
@caitlinrgreen Why? Did they dig up too much of the site? -
@MZiegler3 Nope, just made a hole & extracted hoard. But no sectionsand plans drawn etc. However, whilst true, I think too easy to > -
@MZiegler3 > criticise, esp as they had a FLO (expert) there with them, and metal-detected finds have made a massive difference to data-set! -
@caitlinrgreen@MZiegler3 in my experience most coin hoards are found in undeveloped fields - usually little archaeology to find -
@greg_jenner@MZiegler3 Indeed! How much data was really lost here? In some cases, as at Swallow, the loss of context is worrying, but here? -
@caitlinrgreen@MZiegler3 archaeology is so often destruction; we preserve in record but we don't put things back as they were - 8 more replies

@caitlinrgreen I'm still hopeful that we'll one day be able to acquire the runic spindle whirl @collectionlinc too! -
@lidongni @collectionlinc Oh, that would be lovely :) I hope you manage to, would make a nice addition!

@caitlinrgreen That's the genius of the PAS, as far as I understand it, drawing detectorists willingly into the archaeological community. -
@llewelyn_morgan Exactly--the PAS (&pre-PAS initiatives like that run by Kevin Leahy_ really have made tremendous difference in this regard! -
@caitlinrgreen@llewelyn_morgan and it's great they have dynamic enthusiastic people like@portableant working for them!
