@caitlinrgreen @LoveArchaeology @NtlMuseumsScot that's really facinating
Ao these coins were made in England? Or brought through trade?
@Think_first_ca @LoveArchaeology @NtlMuseumsScot Via trade, prob as bullion traded in return for furs+slaves etc by Central Asian merchants
@caitlinrgreen @LoveArchaeology @NtlMuseumsScot figured. Thanks so much. Love the posts. Always so interesting. Need a volunteer? Onadig? ;)
@Think_first_ca lol! And thanks :)
Mentioned before, but this by @HorneSupremacy is v good on Islamic dirhams in British Isles :) http://issuu.com/lovearchaeologymagazine/docs/t.horne …pic.twitter.com/mcbB1TKdxC
@caitlinrgreen how these coins ended up in England?? Were they brought by the prisoners of crusades ??
@Umarkarim89 They mainly arrived with the Vikings---coins brought up through Russia, into the Baltic and then across to Britain.
@caitlinrgreen then these must be pre Islamic because I think Islam reached Uzbekistan in the 8th Century so Vikings going there unlikely
@caitlinrgreen ahaan nice. Now it makes perfect sense actually I thought Vikings were only a Scandinavian phenomenon so that confused me
@Umarkarim89 Glad it clarifies :) Btw, Vikings came from Scandinavia, but conquered/settled E+N England from 9thC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danelaw
@caitlinrgreen ahaan well our exposure with Vikings is mainly from the TV series :D but a as far as I know they settled in very small number
@Umarkarim89 it varied---a lot more settlers in areas of England where Islamic coins found than elsewhere :)
@caitlinrgreen That is a great map, Cate. Please publish it formally too? It's terrific
@DrSueOosthuizen Oh, thank you! :) And I'll have a ponder on that one, thank you! Have to admit, do like maps which also show density!
@caitlinrgreen One penny saved can travel a long way. OK, counterfeited. But the spirit is there!
