Continued activity at palace to end of coin sequence interesting, especially in light of this: http://www.caitlingreen.org/2014/10/post-roman-provinces-landscape.html …pic.twitter.com/gKWHtX0bxp
NB has been argued that villa estate bounds prob identical to 11thC+later estate of St Mary's Abbey here...!pic.twitter.com/wm20Iid7Ua
FWIW tradition in 16thC Lincoln that St Mary's was originally an Anglo-Saxon 7thC minster---possible conduit for estate survival 7th-11thC?!
@caitlinrgreen Dr i read somewhere that today the Normans who invaded Britain in 9th century constitut a 5th of its population. is it right?
@Umarkarim89 The Vikings? Think that's too high a figure, but prob significant immigration of Scandinavian ppl to some areas of Britain then
@caitlinrgreen no no not the vikings bt the men from Norman coast who came after vikings, the shave headed knights who defeated english
@Umarkarim89 Ah, I see. There were probably even less of them than the Vikings, although perhaps more than sometimes suggested.
@caitlinrgreen actually i was seeing a film series with the name 1066 & they told that english defeated vikings bt not against these knights
Palace had magnificent position on hill, looking S across Witham gap, prob terraced gardens on slopes below. Villa baths=2nd image in post.
@caitlinrgreen come to think of it, also have terraced gardens, but abode certainly not palatial!
@CatherineEsse Hah! Well, nice to have the view! It's a fascinating site, has to be said and suspect more might be found at some point!
@caitlinrgreen either ex allotmenteers, or possibly ironstone mine workers pipes?
@CatherineEsse Ooh, yes, possibly. Hmm. Don't know enough about the archaeology of clay pipes, sadly!
@caitlinrgreen based on my own informal research of previous land use of area prior to development, + guess re who might smoke clay popes!
@caitlinrgreen where are the mosaics? do not tell me under the estate???
@morangles Lincoln museum recorded as destination of many finds, site destroyed by ironstone mining & then 1920s-40s housing development :-/
@caitlinrgreen So worth a visit Hoping Museum opens on saturday!
@morangles Worth a go, certainly---lots to see there anyway! Think shuts at 3:30 on Saturdays :)
