#LRT This seems like the moment for a reminder that insistence upon justifiable readings of Arabic texts by people who can read Arabic is not a denial of contact between Vikings and Muslims, but rather an insistence upon some basic evidentiary standards. http://lcc.ku.edu/articles/translating-in-the-land-of-liberty/ …

#LT And no, I'm not letting this one go because for me it was a turning point in how I see the field of Medieval Studies and my (lack of a) place in it.

#LT We can be just and righteous and active in our causes while still doing our scholarship well. *That* is fundamentally what distinguishes real scholars from alt-right fantasists.

#LT Our scholarship doesn't look the way it does because we make things up to suit our causes but rather because we take a good hard look at what the Middle Ages really was against the grain of neatly-packaged received wisdom.

#LT But once people go off saying that it doesn't matter to distinguish between a geometric pattern, pseudo-Arabic writing, and Arabic names because it might harm liberal causes to do so, that starts to look not too different from this sort of nonsense...pic.twitter.com/jwzdC9ZZrA

#LT ...which is equally playing fast and loose with the divine name in Arabic and Middle Arabic dialectology in the service of right-wing and Islamophhobic causes.

So. Go read al-Ghazal. Here's a short study about him, even: https://www.amazon.es/Al-Ghazal-Embajada-Hispano-Musulmana-Vikingos-Tiempos/dp/8478132384 … And then go do your work well and listen to people with expertise that is different from and complementary to yours, and I think we'll come out alright in the end.

(out of curiosity, any idea why that volume has the early 7thC, Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo helmet on the cover...!?)

Sometimes Spanish academic publishing is great and sometimes it is inscrutable.
