Oh, did Nick Higham make an appearance? I have always felt his book on the topic is rather good and somewhat undercited… Though the real crime is how few bother citing Oliver Padel's fabulous & inspiring work on the early Arthurian legend, which showed the 'historical' aspects >

(Of course, the fact that Oliver Padel's 1994 article, which I seem to recall also inspired Nick Higham's book, is in a rather difficult to obtain and not yet online journal maybe doesn't help!)
