Well, there'd still be the linguistic/place-name evidence, the 5th-6thC church in the forum with reexamined C14 dating that confirms pre-7thC date, the textual refs and other similar evidence, so I'd say no, but we might need to rethink the meaning of the crem cems... However, >
> how much is there? Stamped pottery known from Cherry Willingham known since 70s, after all.. if it's a huge spread from an urnfield covering acres like Cleatham or West Keal, then that's exciting and intriguing, but if it's just a few pieces or part of a cremation element in >
> a small mixed cem (i.e. not a large cremation-predominant cem) then not convinced it advances us much... Likewise, date of the site would be significant (5thC, v interesting, 6thC less so etc) Indeed, there's a nearer find to Lincoln of 6thC stamped pottery fwiw, at >
Westwick Gardens/Rookery Lane :) See here and map of AS stamped pottery: http://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue41/2/5.html …pic.twitter.com/gRNuKFqrcn
So, these are the 1978–80 Cherry Willingham finds: more details here of the site — http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=MLI52864&resourceID=1006 … As already known, taken account of, & not a new major cem (which would've been fascinating!), I think can remain unworried for the post-Roman British kingdom of Lindēs ;)
Yes its from these unpublished 1980s excavations, so that HER entry is based on few lines in Lincs Hist & Arch
I borrowed them @collectionusher for today's Cherry Willingham LEB Archaeology exhibition and Adam spotted them!
Be great to get it written up/contexts for finds if Naomi Field gets time. Interesting site with metalworking too
The eternal issue with Lincolnshire Anglo-Saxon material, alas! One day Loveden Hill may be written up too, though English Heritage have reportedly lost the report prepared in the 90s... I seem to recall that there's more detail in the HER proper on the Cherry Willingham finds >
> beyond the LHA bits, as there is on Welton etc; I took photocopies of all the unpub Anglo-Saxon material in the HER a decade or so back when researching my thesis, though would need to hunt out the boxes now to check! :)
