Sorry.... I am not familiar with all the Arthurian legends. Why was he fighting a cat? (Let’s ignore the goat for now)
Multiple versions of his death/undeath seem to have existed — Camlann is but one, with being killed by a giant cat-monster appearing to be another and arguably possibly as old; likewise, other early material implies his death is impossible :)
If he dies, the once and future king of the Celts just rises again. Hic iacet Arthurus, rex quondam, rexque futurus "Here lies Arthur, king once, and king to be." (Le Morte d'Arthur)
Indeed! In the early 12thC his continued life (and French scepticism of this) was the cause of such heightened passions as to lead to violence...!
