Fabulous, isn't it! I recall reading a paper on the Sutton Hoo goods (in ASSAH 2?) that suggested they must have access to methods that are otherwise documented only in the post-medieval period...
I think there may have been a documentary where a leading jeweller was asked how a piece from the collection could have been made and they were flabbergasted!
