Of course, worth recalling once more that Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest building in the *world* from 1311 to 1548 (160m), when its central spire fell in a storm! The two smaller spires survived to the 19thC :) https://georgianera.wordpress.com/2016/11/29/lincoln-cathedral-georgian-renovations/amp/ …pic.twitter.com/pgu89T8Ou1

Lol! It won't win, ultimately, I don't think — even if it gets through this round, I can't see Hagia Sophia not triumphing in the end, but I do nonetheless think it's a gorgeous building and stunningly located! Plus there's evidence for a bishop here back into the 4th century...!

Just got this 'sent' post card of Lincoln Cathedral, West front, dated August 1906. Interesting to see it minus the tall spires and the building in front of the cathedral one story lower.

Hagia Sophia is my favourite building though. I have spent hours and hours in there. But all of those buildings are miracles when you think of the time they were built.

There are reconstructions but no contemporary images, alas — must have been a sight, though, as it dominates the landscape even in its current shorter form...!
