Why has little Stow got such an enormous minster?
Ooh, now there's a question! May go back to the Middle Saxon era in terms of ecclesiastical importance and I do wonder if not a Christianisation of earlier pagan estate...... ;)
Oh thank you! I do find the Christianisation of pagan sites (like La Hougue Bie & Knowlton) fascinating.
I visited a couple of months ago to get photos for a chapter on Lady Godiva in my next book. The interior is incredible - loved the Viking graffiti!
Yes, agreed! :)
Great church. And don't miss Coates not far away....
A rare St Edith dedication — they cluster around three Anglo-Saxon church sites in Lincolnshire :)
Is this the one with the (probably) Viking longship scrawled on the wall?
That's the one!
Oooh, I used to go to Sturton by Stowe for Sunday lunch, then a walk round to the church!
Sounds like a perfect Sunday, lol! :)
