The only thing that is telling about this whole situation is how many people have responded in this absolutely convoluted way to what is just a straightforward case of unprofessional and rude behaviour in an outward facing role in a prominently public workplace. ffs.

Completely. It's turned into another unedifying example of journalists refusing to believe they should be held to the same standards of behaviour as everyone else.

So true and interesting. I'm a vegan and a millennial and I'm really surprised this guy got sacked for a bad joke. It's really disproportional, IMHO. We have to be careful that 'being nice to all' doesn't become too 1984.
-
I've tried to relate it to my job. If I emailed a supplier / customer a similar email, I'd 99% get booted out immediately, I might be able to beg for a final warning. This bloke just took the golden goodbye...
-
That is also very true. I have no information about the relationship between the journalist and Sitwell. If it was their first contact, than I'm much less forgiving. If they emailed quite a lot about possible articles, it's more of a dumb joke.

I suspect that those analysing this as it played out up to the announcement are missing the point. He was rude and unprofessional and rather Ratner. I suspect he was toast as soon as it came out and the delay has been negotiating a settlement agreement. Probably with mutual NDA.
-
Oh please let there be an NDA. That will get the freedom of speech outrageists out in hives.
-
If there is a settement agreement, I'd give close to 100% chance of an NDA clause. Which he will have been pushing for in a 'jump or be pushed' scenario.

While Waitrosegate rumbles on, here in Sheffield we have a new burger restaurant (
@randyssheff) opened with menu items including "The Weinstein" "The Casting Couch" "Say Nuttin" and "Fake Taxi". That's a food based story that tells us something about 2018...

Ugh REALLY?!
-
Oh god that manager’s response has made me so angry. ‘We didn’t realise people would be so bothered by us making light of, and attempting to profit from, incidents of sexual assault’
-
It feels like it has to be some kind of Chris Morris parody - it's just so unbelievably awful.

It's not some microcosm of society. The guy was an arse and he got sacked

With regards to the 'it was a joke' - yeah, the killing vegans bit was, but further on the 'exposing their hypocrisy' didn't read like a joke at all. He meant it. What hypocrisy I don't know, but it didn't read like a joke. Pure Ratner moment.

Privately educated privileged man finds himself subject to the same workplace rules as everyday schmuck horror! Like it will have any impact on his over-privileged life anyway.

Somebody made a better argument as to why this is wrong on
@bbc5live. His views did not align with that of his employer when behaving in a professional capacity, which is why he is not suitable for the role. This doesn't even need to be a veganism debate.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

See, I'm normally on the PC-gawn-mad side of things these days, but this seems an open and shut case of unprofessionalism. It *wasn't* a private email, he wrote it as an employee of the magazine.
