This needs to start in secondary school. I’m always trying to get more info literacy and research skills into library lessons, making sure students are looking at different resources and learning how to evaluate them. I’m often shocked by how tough they find it.

I’d say it needs to start in primary - looking at fairy stories from a different perspective, reading news stories, asking does that seem right to you? Teaching vocabulary and skills to promote curiosity and discussion. It’s why access to primary sch librarians are so important

In case useful - we produced a number of resources for teenagers to help them both specifically with research for projects but also more generally to help them discriminate and to do better online searches ....http://www.teentech.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/TeenTech-Awards-Research-Pack.pdf …

This is where the long-derided Media Studies qualification comes into its own.
-
Exactly; calls for this sort of information and media literacy have been in place since Raymond Williams in the 1960s at least. But those making the media often don't see having critical audiences as a benefit, so deride it.

Which is why key Q of the OU MA Classical Studies is ‘how do we know what we know?’ with sub-Q on ‘how did people in ancient world know what they knew?’!

Big phrase is our house “what’s the source of your information” then you discuss where they got it. Teach critical thinking early on

Yes! Had an example just this week with my 10 year old helping him do his history homework. He ended up researching Roman history on a Christian church website. Context was vital!

TOTALLY agree! Our brains code in stories - for good & bad - kids need to learn the difference. Am reading
@danlevitin on the same. Encouragingly@pewresearch found younger people better than older at telling fact from opinion - but we gotta keep on it!https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/10/older-people-are-worse-than-young-people-at-telling-fact-from-opinion/573739/ …Thanks. I had a ‘theory of knowledge’ class at school which did this, alongside some philosophy and ethics. Part of the international baccalaureate and should be taught to all.

During this time the government has enforced its ‘knowledge based curriculum’ whereby children are required to regurgitate facts. The much-derided Media Studies course was excellent for teaching the questioning skills needed.

I think this starts in the religious education classes. If you can get kids believing people split moons, rose from the dead and reincarnate then it isn’t a leap to get them thinking all sorts of conspiracy bullshit. Teach them how to think, not what to think.
